FAQ

AP Classes

NUAMES currently offers AP Biology, AP Psychology and AP European History. Students must earn a score of 3 or higher to earn college credit.

Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent Enrollment (CE) classes give students the opportunity to earn college credit towards their degree and graduation without being in WSU Early College. These classes are taught at the Davis Campus by NUAMES teachers. Students can earn college credit from Utah State University (CE MATH 1060), Salt Lake Community College (CE CHEM 1010), and Weber State University (All other CE classes).

For admin purposes concurrent enrollment is the most economical choice to provide NUAMES students with college credit. CE classes also allow NUAMES to have more control on supporting students in the process of earning college credit.

Early College

Eligible Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering & Science (NUAMES) High School juniors and seniors can take courses through NUAMES Early College with other university students on WSU’s campuses. Students can earn up to two years of university credit that may also apply toward high school graduation requirements.

Juniors and seniors must have an index score of at least 106. Index scores are calculated using the high school GPA recorded on an accredited high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores. Student must meet all requirements and meet deadlines for admissions prior to being enrolled in early college. (For more information on Early College refer to EC reference sheet).

Charter schools are independent public schools open to all students and authorized by the State Board of Education. They operate on public funds without tuition. The goal of charter schools is to provide additional educational options for students and parents.

Yes, charter schools are subject to the same laws and regulations as any Utah public school, including laws regarding: religion, school fees, health and safety, and civil rights. In addition, charter schools are required to participate in standardized testing and meet and report yearly progress goals. Charter schools are also required to employ educators who meet all State requirements.

Charter schools are funded on the principle that state funds follow the student, just as in traditional public schools. A charter school may not charge tuition or require students or parents to make donations.

No. A charter school is part of the public education system and is open to all students, without discrimination, on the same basis as other public schools.

A lottery is what occurs if the number of applicants exceeds the available capacity of any grade within the school. NUAMES will give siblings preference in the enrollment process. However, due to the varying demand among grades, it is possible that not all children of the family will be concurrently enrolled.

A charter school must make the same annual reports as other public schools, including an annual financial audit and monthly budget report. Additionally, the charter school must participate in statewide testing programs. Charter schools submit all reports to the Utah State Board of Education.

In addition, like public schools, we are accountable to the parents and families that support and attend NUAMES. We look at parents as our clients and work hard to make NUAMES a school to be proud of. We also believe that students are responsible for their learning and achievements and teach them to participate in their education and accountability.

Additional information can be found on the Utah State Board of Education web site at the Utah Charter Schools website.

No, NUAMES is a public charter school. Charter schools have a charter, or a contract, between the school, school districts, and the Utah State Board of Education. The charter sets forth the conditions under which the school will operate. Additional information can be obtained through the Charter School's Homepage on the Utah State Board of Education website at the Utah Charter School website.

As a public school, NUAMES is funded primarily by state funding. In addition, we are actively pursuing contributions from a variety of sources including businesses and foundations.

After acceptance, students' interests and abilities will be assessed in conjunction with staff and parents to determine course readiness and placement. Summer and after school assistance will be provided for students who require or request any additional support as they pursue the course requirements.

In addition, faculty from Weber State University will instruct 11th and 12th graders as they participate in university courses. Visiting professionals will also offer specialized seminars and extended exploratory sessions.

We see parents active in the success of their children. There will be a variety of opportunities for parents, including an active parent-teacher-student organization, a parent resource center, and a volunteer organization.
