An Early College High School
Supporting and preparing students every step of the way.
NUAMES (Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering & Science) is an early college high school, operating in its twenty-first year, with campuses in Layton and Ogden, Utah. NUAMES is partnered with Weber State University, it offers high school students the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school.
Over half of NUAMES seniors earn their associate degree one month prior to graduating from high school. This helps for NUAMES students to have a significant head start on their higher education journey.
NUAMES emphasizes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, and provides a rigorous and supportive early college experience that is designed to prepare students for college and careers in technical fields. NUAMES is known for its small class sizes, dedicated faculty, and hands-on learning experiences and its warm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
NUAMES has consistently ranked as one of Utah’s top high schools, by meeting students where they are and supporting them to get to where they need to be.
NUAMES follows the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Early College High School Initiative (ECHSI) model and is compliant with the National Early College Standards.
NUAMES partners with Weber State University to offer students an opportunity to earn an associate’s degree or up to two years of college credits toward a bachelor’s degree during high school at no or low cost to the students. The underlying assumption is that engaging students in a rigorous high school curriculum, in a small school environment, with high levels of support, tied to the incentive of earning college credit will motivate students and increase their access to additional postsecondary education and credentials after high school. NUAMES has been partnering with Weber State University for twenty years to create an environment where students can feel supported and comfortable in the transition from secondary public education to higher education.
What better way to prepare students for college than in a college environment?
NUAMES prepares students for higher education academically, behaviorally, and in taking away the fear and anxiety that comes with the transition from public education to higher education. NUAMES has collaborated with Weber State University on grants, course offerings, facilities, scholarships, community outreach, internships, early college advising, as well as in many other capacities. NUAMES data supports the research that shows that early college students have better outcomes than they would have had at other high schools.
NUAMES believes all education has value, but we focus on the education that has immediate economic impact in a digitally advanced society.

NUAMES History
Celebrating 20 years of helping students.
NUAMES was mandated by Utah Governor Mike Leavitt, and founded by Weber, Davis and Ogden school districts in partnership with Weber State University and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The purpose of NUAMES was to create a qualified pipeline of students who are exposed to technology, math, engineering and science and prepared to continue on in college and in STEM-related careers.
The first NUAMES campuses were located in Weber County and Davis County and opened its doors in 2004. In the early years of NUAMES, it had an initial chartered student enrollment of 250 students. In 2006, NUAMES moved to the Davis Tech College campus and then in 2008 NUAMES moved to Weber State University’s Layton campus. The move of NUAMES to Weber State’s Layton campus was a catalyst for NUAMES in providing an authentic early college experience on a university campus. Student outcomes shifted upward, student enrollment increased and NUAMES began to take flight.
The joint partnership between NUAMES and Weber State, fosters an environment where students can attend high school on a University Campus, while earning college credit and reaping the benefits of a small, supportive school environment. From 2004 to 2011, NUAMES had an enrollment cap of 350 students. In 2012, NUAMES was granted a charter to double in size over the course of three school years.
In 2017-2018 The NUAMES North campus was approved and chartered up to 550 students over a four-year growth pattern and NUAMES contributed $7.5 million dollars to a new state-of-the-art engineering building on the WSU Ogden campus.
In the fall of 2018, NUAMES North opened its doors to 176 high school students and a new chapter in the NUAMES story began. In the Fall of 2023, the Weber State Noorda Engineering Building was completed and approximately 450 NUAMES students were the first students to attend classes in that building. NUAMES currently serves 1100 students per school year.
