This sophomore-level course is designed to cultivate advanced comprehension, composition, and grammar skills essential for effective communication and critical engagement with complex texts. Emphasis will be placed on the complete writing process, enabling students to develop proficiency in narrative, informational, persuasive, and research-based writing. A significant component of the course will focus on ACT English and Reading preparation, equipping students with the necessary skills to excel in these sections and qualify for NUAMES early college opportunities in the subsequent academic year.

This class will enable students to become skilled readers of a range of literature, including prose, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and short stories. Students are expected to read and respond to a variety of literature independently, in group discussions, and in writing. All facets of language arts - listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be covered. The study of language in use – grammar, mechanics, sentence structure, and usage will be incorporated into this course. We will work on developing critical and analytical thinking skills through reading and writing. Throughout the course, students will engage with texts that deal with controversial contemporary issues. Students will evaluate various authors’ claims and writing styles, and then participate in thoughtful, text-based discussions in order to formulate their own opinions. Students will cultivate writing skills as they work toward an argumentative essay on their topic of choice. They will also sharpen their skills in creativity and figurative language while writing their own original poetry and short stories.

This course will focus on pulling together and applying the accumulation of learning that students have from their previous math courses. They will apply methods from probability and statistics, expanding their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, radical and logarithmic functions, they will expand their study of right triangle trigonometry and will bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems.

Prerequisite: CE students cannot take this class without first completing Secondary I, II, and III. If they completed all three Secondary Math classes, with a C or better in each class, they can use that grade to place into MATH 1040. If they did not complete Secondary Math with a C or better, they can qualify with an ACT score of 22 or a SLCC placement score of MOMS 300.

Statistics is a branch of mathematics that explores concrete connections with everyday living.  Students will develop critical thinking skills with life-long application. Students will gather, graph, examine, compare and interpret data using technology, including graphing calculators or computer statistics software.  They will describe data and make informed decisions and predictions based on data.

The Honors Biology curriculum is designed to present an examination of the living world and related societal issues. Emphasis is placed on the scientific process, cells and cell processes, human anatomy, genetics, evolution, and ecology. It will provide an in-depth, lab-oriented approach to the biological sciences with an emphasis on practical encounters. Honors Biology investigates biological organization starting at a molecular level and culminating with living organisms and their evolutionary history.

This non-majors course will cover a broad survey of living diversity from bacteria to plants and animals. It will introduce students to cell structure and physiology, inheritance, evolution and classification. This class will focus on the integration of biological science into daily events by studying cellular level phenomena, evolutionary relationships, and heritable patterns. Laboratory study, experimentation, and analysis will be completed to illustrate important biological principles and provide a hands-on experience in general biology.

Students will learn to use 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software for architecture and engineering part design. They will learn problem-solving design processes and how they are used in industry.  Students will be exposed to the techniques learned and equipment used by architects and engineers throughout the United States. The techniques covered in this class will be based on standards from both Mechanical and Architectural disciplines. Membership in TSA and/or Robotics is encouraged.

This year-long course prepares students for careers in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. It focuses on 3D CAD software to design and model small residential homes, emphasizing construction methods, materials, codes, and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Students will learn print reading, graphical symbols, line types, and construction terminology. The course includes scaled model construction, research on great residential designs, and project-based learning in residential design. Students will create and present their ideas through analog, digital, and oral presentations, exploring the difference between building homes and creating great architecture. The course also covers architectural readings, design production, and construction documents.

The course emphasizes zoning regulations, building codes, and sustainable construction practices in the design of commercial buildings.
